HOW TO AVOID INJURY IN YOGA

I am here today to talk to you about avoiding injury in yoga. Although generally low impact, like any activity, yoga does offer a small risk of injury. Here are my tips to avoid injury while practicing yoga.

.1. DOCTOR’S ORDERS //

Like any physical activity, your local studio will require that you are physically able to practice yoga. If you have recently been under any kind of medical care, you may be required to bring in a doctor’s note indicating that you have your doctor’s approval to practice yoga.

.2. BE AWARE OF YOUR OWN BODY //

If you have never taken yoga before, it would be beneficial to try and find a yoga for beginners class or maybe even take a private session with a certified yoga teacher to help you understand the basics of yoga. .3. PRACTICE WITH “TODAY’S BODY” //

Just because you were able to do a pose yesterday or everyday before today, today could be different. Make sure you are practicing with the body you have today and at this particular moment of your day.

Your teacher will warm your body up to the practice they have prepared and that may be different from where you are used to going. Make sure to listen to your body. It will always give you signals of what is good and what is not good.

.4. BE MINDFUL OF CURRENT INJURIES //

If you have anything going on in your body that may affect your practice, make sure to let your teacher know. Your teacher wants you to have your most beneficial practice every time you are in the studio (even if that means child’s pose for the entire class). If something is going on, they may recommend some modifications or at least will know that you are honouring your “today’s body” in practice.

.5. SOMETIMES NO YOGA IS GOOD YOGA // 

If you have suffered a traumatic injury or an injury that significantly impacts your ability to move your physical body, saying no to yoga may be the best answer. Even though yoga is considered low impact, if the body needs rest, yoga is not rest. Rest is rest.

 

Make sure to listen to your body, not your ego. It’s better to miss one or three classes then go to one and be out for months!
