HOW TO PUT YOURSELF FIRST

This week’s affirmation is “I am taking care of myself”. Putting yourself first is not selfish. If we want to live a balanced life, we must take care of ourselves first before we can take care of others in any capacity: home, work, school, etc.

In this crazy busy world we live in, how the heck do we put ourselves first?

1. SELF-CARE ROUTINE //

Whether you practice self-care daily (which I highly recommend) or you have a routine to sustain you when you are feeling run down, self-care is the best way to take care of yourself. Warm baths, alone (or “me”) time, outings with friends and families are all great forms of self-care.

When you are planning your self-care routine choose the things that give you energy rather than deplete you of energy. If you are an introvert who is drained by spending time with others (no matter how much fun it is) lean towards time alone to refill your energy levels.

2. SCHEDULE TIME FOR YOURSELF //

Just as we schedule in doctor’s appointments, family events and special events, it’s just as important to schedule in your “me” time. From manicures and massages to reading and watching your favourite movies. Aim for at least one time per week that is designated entirely for you.

3. AVOID OVERBOOKING YOURSELF

As an entrepreneur, my weeks can go from empty to jam packed filled in the snap of a finger. I try to keep one day a week that is intended for me to catch up with myself, catch up on work, and to get to a yoga class. That day doesn’t always work out to be just for me, but the intention is there!

If you have a flexible schedule try to keep either your morning or evening free of appointments so your time is yours to do what you want with it rather than being tied to someone else’s schedule.

4. LEARN TO SAY ‘NO’

I try to say ‘no’ at least once a week. We are always receiving invitations from friends, family, co-workers, and others, make sure to say ‘no’ when you are already feeling overwhelmed (preferably before you feel overwhelmed). If you really want to accept an invitation for something, try and let something else go from your schedule. This goes back to number three, “avoid overbooking yourself”.

It’s also very empowering to say ‘no’. When we feel we are losing control of our schedules and our lives taking control back by saying ‘no’ is amazing!

5. FIND BALANCE IN YOUR DAYS //

All work and no play makes us exhausted! Make sure to balance work and play. Whether you step away from your desk for a great gym session, walk with your dog, or catching up with your favourite podcast, make sure to find balance in your day that isn’t more work.
