WHAT I LEARNED FROM GREEK YOGURT

Today I want to share with you what life lessons I learned from greek yogurt.
On Monday morning, as I was getting ready to head off for my first classes of the day, I was in a bit of a hurry making my breakfast. As I was putting the yogurt back in the fridge, the container crumpled, the lid fell off and a full container of yogurt fell to the ground which resulted in greek yogurt spilling all over my kitchen floor.
Immediately I felt frustrated and angry that I had to clean up this huge mess I made out of haste. I took a minute to breathe, laugh it off and started to clean it up.
As I was cleaning up this mess of yogurt I noticed some parallels to life:
1. A MESS CAN COME OUT OF NOWHERE //
Just as I was going about my regular morning routine, I created quite a mess. This can happen in life as well. Seemingly smooth sailing can turn into treacherous waters in the snap of a finger.
It’s easy to beat ourselves up when things go wrong, but sometimes sh*t just happens, that’s life!
2. WHEN IN DOUBT, TAKE ACTION //
As I looked at the yogurt on the floor I was distracted by what had happened and how it had happened. I was flooded with anger and frustration. But recounting the situation and stewing in my own emotions wasn’t going to change the fact that there was yogurt spilled all over my kitchen floor.
So, I grabbed a sponge and started cleaning. No less than 10 minutes later the kitchen floor was yogurt free and was probably cleaner than it had been 15 minutes prior.
3. LIFE CAN BE MESSY, BUT NOT NECESSARILY BAD //
Things go wrong all the time! But, they aren’t necessarily terrible things that happen. Sure, in the moment it can feel like everything is falling apart, but if you can take a moment to breathe, you will remember what is truly important in life.
Take a walk outside, get some exercise, read a book, watch your favourite movie, talk with a friend, or enjoy your favourite treat. Take yourself out of the messy situation, take yourself out of the negative and you will see a new light towards what is messy in your life. By stepping away you can see a new solution to your situation.
4. WHEN YOU CAN, LAUGH //
A messy situation can feel frustrating, stressful, and annoying. By making light of the situation with laughter, you will take out the frustration and the situation will suddenly feel much more manageable.
In my experience, emotions, especially negative ones, can really mess with your mojo. If you can take the negative emotions out of a situation it will be much easier to come up with a solution to your problem and deal with the situation quickly and efficiently.
5. STORIES TO TELL //
When we do silly things, like dumping yogurt all over our floor, we now have a fun, silly story that we can tell ourselves, our friends, our families, and our students. In the grand scheme of the world and all it’s moving parts, spilling yogurt is just a mere atom of activity that has no real effect to our day, unless we use these incidents to take away valuable life lessons to help ourselves and share positive energy through the rest of our communities.
