“Work/Life Balance” what an endearing term. Creating a balance between your work life and your personal life can be a huge struggle for most. There are just not enough hours in the day. Between commuting, grocery shopping, making dinner, cleaning the house, and trying to get to bed early, where is the time for your favourite gym class, yoga session, or time for meditation?

More and more companies are working to provide in-house wellness programs for their employees. From yoga or fitness classes to massages, companies are seeing the value of providing these services to their employees for free. Of course, not everyone will take advantage of these programs, but wouldn’t it be beneficial to provide these services to those who would benefit the most?

I highly believe in in-house wellness programs, no matter the size of your company. You don’t need to have a gym to provide beneficial services to your employees.

Here are 5 ways that in-house wellness programs are beneficial (to you and your employees):

If you have employees working long hours, such as in the tech industry, legal industry, or other industries, employees may dream of getting the gym before or after work, but their long hours prevent them from doing so. By providing some form of on-site class, whether fitness or yoga, your employees will be given the opportunity to move their bodies during their work day, thus increasing their satisfaction at work in being able to find a better work/life balance.

As my mother says, “a change is as good as a rest”. Employees experience stress at work, at home, during their commute, potentially their entire day could be stressful. By providing an opportunity to switch from work mode to exercise mode, the stressed mind is given time to relax and focus on something more positive and beneficial to the body and mind. After their class, they can switch their work mind back on and continue on their work with a fresh mind.

When the body is in a constant state of stress, the body begins to malfunction. We get colds, flues, headaches, aches and pains. Exercise, in any form, is a stress reliever. By reducing and releasing stress through exercise, the immune system stays strong. The longer the immune system stays strong, the stronger it gets. The body gets better at fighting off sickness, keeping everything working as it should.

On site yoga classes, fitness classes, and workshops give employees an opportunity to get to know each other outside of their work positions. Creating an opportunity to bond with their co-workers in a way they might normally not interact. By creating these bonds, employees often become more tolerant of their differences within each other and find a common ground to work more closely.

Following from above, if your employees stay healthier, longer, then they will not take as many sick days. If fewer people are away, then less extra work falls on the employees that come to work, creating less stress, creating happier employees!
