I learned about sadhana in my last teacher training. Each morning we would start our day with breath, movement, and/or signing/chanting. Some days felt more natural than others and we were encouraged to practice our home sadhana as felt natural on a particular day. One day it might feel good to move the body, another day it might feel most natural to chant or sign. The purpose was to turn inwards and begin to listen to the calling of the body.

Your sadhana can be as complex or as simple as you wish. As I was taught, your sadhana can include breath work, physical practice, meditation, and/or chanting. It may also include ayurvedic practices to support your dosha. Sadhana is a daily practice intended to allow the practitioner to drop into the internal for a few minutes or longer. And it can look different each day. You may choose to start your day off the same way every day or you might practice sadhana at different times every day.

My sadhana is currently a morning routine focusing on staying healthy. I wake up, do my tongue scraping, drink 2 glasses of room temperature water and make my coffee. I usually try to eat something within 30 minutes to an hour of waking up. Since my schedule has been all over the place the past few months, this is all I have time for currently. After I complete this round of training I am looking to add in breath work and/or physical practice.

I also have an evening routine of washing my face, brushing my teeth, journalling (even just a sentence or two) and watching an episode of Seinfeld. This routine helps me to relax and unwind from my day. Both of these daily practices allow me to focus on the health of my body and mind. Your practice may including writing, reading, having tea before bed or anything else that serves you.

The idea behind practicing sadhana is the internal awareness and learning to listen to the needs of the body. Over time, your daily life will be a reflection of your sadhana. Eventually, you will start living a life filled with intention, more of what you do will be done with purpose, leading to a more fulfilling life.
