using music as a tool while teaching

As yoga teachers, we have a variety of tools we can use to create a unique experience for our students.

Music is one of those tools that can make or break the experience of your students.

Here are my tips for using music in your classes:

1. Quieter is better

Music should support your class, not run it.

You may have students that are easily overstimulated by loud noises (including music that is too loud). The best tip I have for this is if you have to raise your voice to talk over the music, then your music is too loud.

2. Instrumental music is better than lyrical music

When you teach a flow class, you are talking a lot. If you have music with vocals, your students may get lost in the words of the music and lose focus on your instruction.

Additionally, songs with vocals are more likely to remind students of a specific time in their life that may pull them out of the grounding purpose of yoga.

3. Be mindful when playing DJ

If you decide to change a song mid-way through, turn down the music, change the song, and then turn the music back up again. Music should not be the thing the distracts your students in your class. It should be a tool used to support your students and your sequence.
